Partners strive to build a successful relationship. However, the relationship between partners may not last despite the efforts made by one or both parties.
According to simplypsychology, relationships fail for many reasons. Failure is often the result of a combination of different factors that make partners feel dissatisfied and unhappy.
Reasons for Relationship Failure
1. Criticism

Criticism involves attacking your partner's personality, rather than focusing on a specific behavior. It is characterized by blame, accusations, and generalizations.
This constant criticism can lead your partner to feel attacked, rejected, and hurt. It often includes phrases like "you always" or "you never do that."
Criticism leads to:
- Erosion of self-esteem: Constant exposure to attack and criticism detracts from a person's self-esteem and makes them feel incompetent, unworthy, and unloved.
- Breakdown of communication: The person becomes emotionally distant and defensive as a result of feeling judged and attacked.
- Resentment: Feeling unappreciated and worthless leads to resentment and frustration, creating emotional distance.
- Trust issues: Criticism destroys emotional security and trust.
2. Contempt

Contempt is the worst type of disdain; it involves treating your partner with disrespect, disgust, belittling, or sarcasm.
Contempt can be expressed through insults, name-calling, hostile humor, mockery, bad looks, or even malicious sarcasm.
All of the above actions convey a message that one of the partners is superior and the other (the victim) is worthless. Therefore, contempt can contribute to relationship failure because it leads to:
- Lack of respect: Without respect, the relationship is sure to fail.
- Emotional harm: Contempt leads the victim to feel ashamed, distressed, and worthless, damaging their self-esteem.
- Breakdown of communication: Sarcasm, mockery, criticism, and insults are not effective communication tools. They prevent couples from resolving disputes and addressing issues constructively; in fact, they lead to more disagreements.
3. Defensiveness

Defensiveness is usually a reaction to criticism. When we feel accused or attacked, we often respond by defending ourselves, making excuses, denying responsibility, or even launching a counterattack.
Therefore, many resort to denying responsibility and avoiding blame, believing that the other is criticizing or blaming them. Although defensiveness is understandable, it does not solve problems; instead, it escalates tension and creates a hostile interaction.
Defensiveness can contribute to relationship failure because it leads to:
- Interrupted communication: It hinders open and honest communication and does not allow for effective conflict resolution.
- Lack of accountability: Instead of listening and working towards a solution, the defensive person resorts to avoiding blame and making excuses, which can exacerbate conflicts.
- Loss of connection: It creates emotional barriers and distance, making it difficult to maintain a close connection.
