A recent study published in the journal "NeuroImage" suggests that short afternoon naps, not exceeding 45 minutes, can improve learning ability by restoring the flexibility of neural connections in the brain, making it more receptive to new information.

The study involved 20 healthy young adults who underwent two experiments at different times in the afternoon: in the first, they took a nap, and in the second, they remained awake. The average nap duration was around 45 minutes.

The results, obtained by researchers from the Universities of Freiburg and Geneva, showed that short daytime sleep helps rebalance neural synapses that are affected by the accumulation of daily experiences.

As the day progresses and new information is acquired, the strength of connections between neurons increases, which supports the learning process. However, this can simultaneously reduce brain flexibility and its capacity to absorb more. Short naps help restore this balance, preparing the brain for new learning.

Why is it preferable not to extend naps?

Sleep researchers indicate that short sleep periods, even if limited, contribute to improved information processing. Moderate naps also help enhance mental clarity and focus, which positively impacts overall cognitive performance.

In the same vein, these findings align with previous studies on the importance of sleep in memory consolidation. Research from Harvard Medical School has shown that sleep plays a role in transferring information from short-term to long-term memory. Other studies have also indicated that sleep contributes to regulating neural connections and maintaining brain efficiency.

The National Sleep Foundation recommends that nap duration range between 20 and 90 minutes as needed. Short naps (20–30 minutes) help increase alertness without causing grogginess, while longer naps may offer additional benefits associated with deep sleep stages.

Overall, the data suggests that moderate naps during the day can be a practical way to support learning and improve concentration, in addition to the importance of getting sufficient nighttime sleep for maintaining mental health.
